Season Opener:
Bucolic Beethoven and Fiery Poulenc

The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s opens the Music Guild’s 2010 - 2011 season with Organist Thomas Foster in Francis Poulenc’s dramatic Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani. After the fireworks, sit back and enjoy Beethoven’s most tuneful and bucolic work: the Pastoral Symphony.

Chamber Music Night with members of
The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew's

Music Director Tom Neenan and members of The Chamber Orchestra present a rich and varied evening of large ensemble chamber music to include the youthful Septet for Winds and Strings by Ludwig van Beethoven, chamber music of Jean Françaix and an arrangement for chamber ensemble of Richard Strauss’s hilarious Til Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks.

Annual Holiday Concert - Bach's "Magnificent" Magnificat

The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s is joined by the Choir and Soloists of St. Matthew’s Parish in music by J.S. Bach and Henry Purcell, featuring Bach’s festive “Magnificat” in D Major and the Fourth Brandenburg Concerto.

José Peréz, Rossini and Respighi

José Adán Peréz has thrilled audiences in Europe and the Americas with his exciting operatic and zarzuela roles. Peréz will offer operatic highlights by Rossini and Mozart and the Chamber Orchestra adds an Italian flair with Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances.”

Pergolesi, Sibelius and a Music Guild commission
Featuring the South Bay Children's Choir and soprano Diane Plaster

Giovanni Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” is one of the great masterpieces of the 18th century. The concert will include Jean Sibelius’s impressionistic score for “Pelleas and Melisande” and the premiere of a new commission for string orchestra. Concert generously underwritten by Music Guild Subscribers Gordon & Karen Dressler.

USC's Thornton Chamber Choir in Concert

Gjeilo’s “Dark Night of the Soul” for string quartet, piano, and chorus will be featured with two new compositions by USC composers, plus folksongs, and choral classics by Schütz and Monteverdi. Jo-Michael Scheibe conducts.

June 10 Season Finale

Haydn's "Lord Nelson," Bruch's Violin Concerto and a World Premiere

The Chamber Orchestra and Choir of St. Matthew’s Parish complete the season in grand style with Haydn’s dramatic “Lord Nelson” Mass and Bruch’s romantic G minor Violin Concerto featuring concertmaster Yi-Huan Zhao. The concert will also feature the world premiere of a new Music Guild commission. The commission is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
